LEARN ABOUT THE LAW IN COLORADO

In Colorado, the law known as “Slow Down Move Over” is described in Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) 42-4-705.

Currently, the law is written to protect any ‘authorized’ emergency, towing carrier or utility vehicles. Governor Jared Polis has signed into law the expansion of this statute to include ANY stationary vehicle on the side of the road displaying warning lights (which also includes every vehicle’s standard “hazard flashers”.

If you are traveling a road with more than 1 lane in your travel direction and come across a vehicle on the side of the road, always attempt to safely change lanes (if available) and move over 1 moving lane away from the stationary vehicle. If moving over is not possible due to no other lane, weather/road conditions, other vehicle or pedestrian traffic, then reduce and maintain a safe speed (don’t slam on the breaks and cause an accident).

If you are already moved over, be aware of other drivers next to you who may also be trying to move over. Often vehicles are unable to move over because another vehicle is “blocking” them from doing so.

SLOWING DOWN:
Here are suggested speed reductions based on posted speed limit:

  • If the posted speed limit is 45 mph or faster, safely reduce your speed to 25 mph under the posted speed limit.

  • If the posted speed limit is under 45 mph, reduce your speed to 25 mph.
